H P Blavatsky on Dealing with Change

Comfort Zones are not the Answer

The main cause of pain lies in our perpetually seeking

the permanent in the impermanent, and not only seeking,

but acting as if we had already found the unchangeable

in a world of which the one certain quality we can

predicate is constant change

*********************

The idea of growth involves also the idea of disruption:

the inner being must continually burst through its

confining shell or encasement, and such a disruption

must also be accompanied by pain, not physical

but mental and intellectual.

Theosophy postulates several laws operating within the universe that relate to change and that change and the mechanisms supporting it are an integral part of existence.

These Laws are;

The Law of Periodicity:-

For every period of activity there is a corresponding and consequent period of rest. This is seen in night and day, the ebb and flow of tides, waking and sleeping , birth and death.

The Law of Adjustment:-

Any disturbance to the natural progress of evolution is corrected.

The Law of Motion:-

Nothing can remain isolated of static.

____________

Clearly Fred Hoyle’s Constant State Universe would have been a non-starter to H P Blavatsky and her message is clear in Spiritual Progress that to make any progress in our Dynamic Universe, we need to be dynamic as well and respond to the challenges which inevitable change will bring.

In the following extract from Spiritual Progress, H P Blavatsky warns against creating our own illusory comfort zone based on the notion of permanence and not moving outside it.

“acting as if we had already found the unchangeable in a world of which the one certain quality we can predicate is constant change; and always, just as we fancy we have taken a firm hold upon the permanent, it changes within our very grasp”

A further indication is given as to the ultimate consequences of not embracing change and standing against it.

“And this is how it is, in the course of our lives, the trouble that comes upon us is always just the one we feel to be the hardest that could possibly happen -- it is always the one thing we feel we cannot possibly bear.”

Being resistant to change or adopting a philosophy which make you resistant to change can keep you within a comfort zone and this may appear to have some short term success. The problem is that when change does come you will be less able to deal with it.
