Energy
withdrawal towards
the end of physical life.
The
process of phasing out

You may bury my body down by the highway side
Baby, I don't care where you bury my body
when
I'm dead and gone
You may bury my body, down by the highway side
So my old evil spirit can catch a Greyhound
bus and ride.

Theosophy maintains that towards the end of a physical life lived
by someone who lives more or less a normal lifespan there is a natural
withdrawal of energy from and enthusiasm for life.
It is sometimes said that some people decide when to die and
although that is rather too simple a description, there is an element of self
determination which is dependant on the personality and the life being lived.
There are some people who extend life by personal will for a
particular purpose or are just stubborn and there are those who lose interest
and give up.
It seems that as we approach the end of our lives we don’t just
die but rather phase out. It is quite common for people near the end of life to
be very comfortable with the fact and that interest in spirituality (not
necessarily religion) can develop. The view of the world can become more
objective and there can be a reordering of what is important.
This is not just a result of psychological adaptation to an
inevitable and unknown situation but a realization at a subtle level of the
natural order of the death and rebirth cycle and that it is all one continuum.
At the other end of the scale, resistance to the idea of death
although now seen as a positive attitude and which and may keep you going a bit
longer, will at the end make the process of letting go quite difficult. On
entering the after death state, the desire body may pull back toward the
physical plane and tougher itself up to avoid disintegration.
A toughened up and stubborn desire body is something you won’t
need as it will prevent you from progressing through the after death states and
keep you trapped close to the physical plane for a long time.
All this is independent of most current life extension movements
who seek to extend overall active and useful life span. Even if living to 150 becomes
the norm as it may do this century then the withdrawal process as the end
approaches will still be valid.
Sadly this process is not applicable to those who die an early
death unless in some cases where there is a long illness.
